Hot Spot: Merriweather Coffee and Kitchen

Merriweather Coffee and Kitchen is nestled on a quiet street in the West Village, situated near Printing House and Skylight Clarkson. Where trendy restaurants and novel bars inhabit, an Aussie coffee shop quietly opened to offer the most consistent, best coffee in all of New York.  Having  only been open for 3 weeks, Merriweather has been successfully  banking on the nearby techies, fashionistas and creative types who both live and work in the area and have adopted Merriweather as their new neighborhood spot before the workday grind gets to them. The immediate success has been quite a surprise for owner and founder Pete, as he initially expected the summer to be rather slow. However, once word got out of this quaint coffee cafe, business started booming.

Merriweather is named after Merewether beach, the beachside Pete regularly visited in hometown Australia. Similar to the laid back vibes us Americans equate with Australian beaches, the open space of Merriweather mirros the same stress free days we seek to find in our busy lives.

I was super amped to try this new coffee spot. Coffee is definitely my jam and I am the first to state my opinion on a good latte. After the barista handed me an iced latte with macadamia milk, I was hooked. Smooth, moderately sweet and creamy, this was an excellent cup of coffee. Pete notes the top of the line machinery creates this consistently smooth base, an espresso machine so high-end, he is one of the very few coffee shops in the nation that own and use it.

I also went ahead and ordered the avocado smash, a staple among most Aussie restaurants. The toast had a healthy heaping of avocado, sprinkled with sesame seeds and dusted with red chili pepper flakes. A wonderful combination of ingredients, perfect as a light option for lunch, breakfast or an afternoon snack.

I welcome you to visit Merriweather and enjoy all the wonderfulness it offers. Any time New York is offering a place of reprieve from the hustling city it's worth it and Merriweather is just the spot. Click the link below for further information.

  1. I photographed a fundraising conference here recently. What a wonderful place for photos. I almost always hate being anywhere at 6am, but this breakfast event proved an exception. The manger and his staff at event venue Chicago were extremely professional.
